Guilty or Innocent?

Revisiting the Sam Shepherd and OJ Simpson Trials

Mary Atwell recently retired from Radford University where she was a Professor of Criminal Justice.  She has published four books dealing with legal subjects:  Equal Protection of the Law?  Gender and Justice in the United States; Evolving Standards of Decency:  Popular Culture and Capital Punishment; Wretched Sisters:  Examining Gender and Capital Punishment; An American Dilemma:  International Law, Capital Punishment, and Federalism.  She is currently working on a book about sexual harassment.  She holds a PhD from Saint Louis University.

She plans to talk about two twentieth century trials: Husbands accused of murdering their wives; sensational media coverage; questionable courtroom tactics; possible evidence tampering. How can we sort out guilt or innocence in the cases?  Her talk is entitled, “Guilty or Innocent? Revisiting the Sam Shepherd and OJ Simpson Murder Trials.”

The event is sponsored by the Friends of Smith Mountain Lake State Park.  It is being held at the Discovery Center at SML State Park from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. on February 24th.  Tickets are $8.00 and parking fee is included.  For information call SML State Park, 540-297-6066
