The Flight and Plight of the Monarchs

Smith Mountain Lake State Park in Huddleston will begin its winter lecture series January 27 with a presentation on “The Flight and Plight of the Monarch Butterfly,” by Bob Siren.

Siren, a graduate of George Washington University, co-owner of Design & Installation Landscaping Co. in Northern Virginia, moved to Smith Mountain Lake in 2004. He has managed the day to day operations of gardens for the past 12 years. He invites the public to join him as he talks about the herculean annual migration of this delicate insect, the extra hurdles they face today and what you can do to help their plight. He will also discuss the difference between host and nectar plants and their importance.

The lecture series is sponsored by the Friends of Smith Mountain Lake State Park. Lectures will be at the park’s Discovery Center from 3 to 4 p.m. Tickets are $8 per lecture. Season tickets are $22 each or $35 for two tickets. Parking fees are included.
